Reunion dinner for 59 (Huddersfield) Squadron
Building on a previous, smaller reunion dinner two years previously (marking 65 years of the Squadron), Emma and Gary put together an event to mark 65 years of the Air Training Corps.
The venue was the George Hotel, in the centre of Huddersfield and about 10 minutes away from the Squadron’s present base. Contact with former cadets and staff was made via local newspapers, RAF News and the Squadron’s web site and, as well as former cadets, former members of the local Girl Venture Corps were also invited.
Although the dinner was to be self-funded by selling enough places to cover the cost of the venue and meal, the dinner was also an opportunity to raise funds for the Squadron. This was done through a raffle of prizes donated by local organisations, such as Huddersfield Giants and Huddersfield Town, and by donations from some former members, which included free flights on GB Airways.
As well as the two articles before the event, the Huddersfield Daily Examiner sent a photographer down on the night - unusual, for a Saturday - and featured the dinner the following Monday.
As well as raising over £500 for Squadron funds, the dinner also discovered two ne staff members, both former cadets who had moved back into the area.
